Winter in the Morning: A Young Girl's Life in the Warsaw Ghetto and Beyond, 1939-1945

This affecting personal account of life in and out of the Warsaw Ghetto stirringly describes the experiences and emotions of a well-to-do, unreligious, non-Yiddish-speaking teenager who suffered the horrors of being Jewish in a land controlled by the Nazis. Based on her diaries from the war years, the book depicts Bauman's growing self-awareness as she fought for survival. The diaries chronicle her relationships with family and friends, first feelings of love, escape from the ghetto and from Warsaw itself. Non-Jewish Poles, at risk to their own lives, hid her, her mother and sister in cupboards, closets, forests and on farms: though her father and uncle were killed by the Russians, she survived, despite contracting tuberculosis.
