Bill Frank's Forever Young: 100 Age-Erasing Techniques

Bill Frank. William Morrow & Company, $24.95 (272pp) ISBN 978-0-06-019837-4

The subtitle alone is enough to make many readers peruse this volume, and Frank's enthusiasm for the subject of staying young permeates each chapter. Much of his advice, including suggestions for exercising, weight training and drinking sufficient water, is sound-but nothing that readers couldn't find in any health or fitness magazine. Frank, who hosts the television program Forever Young, recommends a diet that is 60% protein, 30% carbohydrate and 10% fat, and suggests distilled water fasts for up to 72 hours. The only warning on this topic comes when Frank mentions that he sometimes fasts for 96 hours, but that he does ""not recommend this to anyone reading this book, without first having a consultation with a physician."" The chapters on hormone therapy and live cell therapy have input from physicians, but are really only cursory discussions of serious subjects. As friendly encouragement to live life to the fullest and stay healthy, this book succeeds, but in its overly wide array of topics-and resulting lack of deep coverage of complicated subjects-it tries to do too much.
