Journey to Boc Boc: The Kidnapping of a Rock Star

Oscar De Mejo. HarperCollins Publishers, $12.95 (48pp) ISBN 978-0-06-021579-8

De Mejo's illustrative talents let readers see, in the span of a picture book, just how idiosyncratic his view of the world is. And yet, this modern story of the fidelity of true love exhibits a very traditional viewpoint. Jack Michaels is a rock star in love with Noona. He's kidnapped by Lysidra, an alien, who takes him to Boc Boc where he plays the most beautiful music of his career. He wants to marry Noona, but Lysidra is reluctant to let him go: she loves him. Lysidra plots to get Noona to fall for a homely but appealing man; Noona remains true to Jack. The tone is meant to be entirely tongue-in-cheek, as quirky for adult readers as for children. De Mejo's blocky figures and weird landscapes make both Boc Boc and Earth very strange lands indeed. All ages. (July)
