Father and Son: A Personal Biography of Senator Frank Church of Idaho

Forrest Church. HarperCollins Publishers, $15.95 (193pp) ISBN 978-0-06-039046-4

The main focus of this quiet, loving memoir is the late Sen. Frank Church, liberal Democrat of Idaho who, as a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was an outspoken opponent of the Vietnam War. The author, in his mid-30s and a church minister in Manhattan, describes a ""great'' father, a happy, caring man who managed to live a full life despite the diagnosis (when he was 23) that he had cancer. He died in 1984. Much of the book's appeal lies in the author's affecting recollections of the father-son relationship, including a period of estrangement when the younger Church was a rebellious college student. Ultimately, the son's reverence for his father's integrity led to his own career in the ministry. Photos not seen by PW. October 30
