Staying Safe: The Complete Guide to Protecting Yourself, Your Family, and Your Business

Juval Aviv. HarperResource, $15.99 (290pp) ISBN 978-0-06-073520-3

You don't have to carry an Uzi to be safe, but achieving safety does require planning and a near-obsessive attention to detail, says Aviv, a former Israeli counterterrorism intelligence officer and presently a corporate consultant on security issues. If you've been opening your mail at the kitchen table, for instance, you might want to rethink that, to avoid ingesting a poisonous agent that might fall out of an envelope. And if you thought security was the government's job, Aviv says the lesson of September 11 is that""individuals must become proactive"" in maintaining their own safety. Aviv spells out in great detail how to safeguard one's home and workplace; his advice is easy to read, and checkmarks and exclamation marks highlight key points. Not only is the advice sound, but much of it deals with the kinds of details one might easily overlook, like making emergency arrangements for pets. Reading Aviv's book might make you a bit paranoid, but it may also make you safer.
