Love Again, Live Again

Steven Morganstern. Prentice Hall, $22.95 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-13-540758-5

This highly readable guide offers hope and sound medical advice to the estimated millions of men who suffer from chronic impotence. Because, maintain the authors, 70% of all cases are physical in cause, physical solutions are their focus: guarding one's health, avoiding medications that can lead to impotence and, for appropriate candidates, penile implants. Morganstern (a urologist who is director of the Atlanta Center for Male Sexual Dysfunction) and Abrahams (a medical and science writer) warn against psychological treatment unless physical cause has been ruled out. They offer a series of simple neurological and vascular self-exams, including a questionnaire for diagnostic purposes, and note that exam results are best discussed in consultation with a doctor. Other helpful features include a listing of impotence support groups; charts outlining various health insurance coverage policies; and names of medications known to cause impotence.
