ROCKO AND SPANKY GO TO A PARTY

Kara LaReau, , illus. by Jenna LaReau. . Harcourt, $15 (40pp) ISBN 978-0-15-216624-3

Rocko and Spanky Socko (twin sock monkeys, naturally) really know how to party. And it's a good thing, as they are invited to "a party at Shelly's House" in this kicky debut picture book by a sister-sister team. Upon receiving an invitation that promises "Friends! Presents! Cake! Fun!," Rocko and Spanky set off to find the perfect present for their pal. Much debate ensues at the Gift-o-Rama before the perky pair select a pair of brown, red-heeled socks. But when they arrive at Shelly's house, present in tow, the cheeky chimps find that the surprise is on them. Kara LaReau gives real oomph to her tale by employing plenty of snappy repartee: " 'What about these boots?' asks Spanky. 'Can I pull off the western look?' 'Please do ,' says Rocko." As complement, Jenna LaReau's artwork harmoniously contains an impressive array of media, from photographs and computer illustration to acrylics and collage. Her characters—old toys seemingly come to life—as well as a predominantly red-green-yellow palette give the book a pleasantly retro look. A cheery note about gift giving and instructions on creating snazzy gift wrap from household items is included on the final spread. After this fashionable and sweet-natured romp, young readers will surely want to join Rocko and Spanky for more adventures. Ages 3-7. (May)
