BETWEEN EAST AND WEST: From Singularity to Community

The author of Speculum of the Other Woman and This Sex Which Is Not One here turns to the practice of yoga as an antidote for the alienating effects of globalization. Drawing on the work of Mircea Eliade and critiquing Schopenhauer's, Irigaray maps a pre–Indo European creative ethic of sexual difference predicated on a respect for life, nature, the feminine and the breath to propose a holistic model of individuation and community in the 21st century: "For woman, the ethical gesture begins with respect for the spiritual life, and not only the natural life, of the other."
