Transcending Turmoil: Survivors of Dysfunctional Families

Transcenders, adult children of dysfunctional families who have overcome abuse and neglect on their own, develop techniques to maintain an authentic sense of self, stresses the author, a Michigan psychologist. Transcenders succeed by affirming themselves, by distancing themselves from their families and drawing closer to others. There are touching case histories of how to do so. ``Transcenders as children, learn to nurture and protect themselves on very little,'' writes LaMar. ``They take in, absorb, and savor tidbits of offerings. These offerings are used for growth over many years.'' The healing process is carefully documented so that others may follow suit.
