All the Way to God

Michael J. Giuliano, Katie Giuliano. Golden Books, $9.95 (32pp) ISBN 978-0-307-10223-2

What was probably a charming family anecdote turns disingenuous in this tale written by a pediatrician and his eight-year-old daughter, and illustrated by the girl and her four brothers. Katie describes how Daddy tucks her into bed with a game: the two trade increasingly expansive terms of endearment (""I love you all the way to the ceiling""--""I love you all the way to the roof""), ending with Katie's unexpectedly profound ""I love you all the way to God."" It's a great punch line, but the artless build-up (""This game was getting to be fun!"") serves only to point out the gulf between this enterprise and its expert counterparts (e.g., Guess How Much I Love You). The children's art is refrigerator-door caliber. Ages 3-7. (Mar.)
