The Big Golden Book of Wild West

Gina Ingoglia, Gene Biggs. Golden Books, $4.21 (61pp) ISBN 978-0-307-17871-8

As its title suggests, this book is a comprehensive introduction to the initial settling and subsequent development of the West. The text is quick to assure readers that there is much more to the era than ``cowboy shoot-outs and Indian attacks.'' Individual tribes of Native Americans are respectfully portrayed as industrious and peaceful; the hardships of pioneer families and the excitement surrounding the Gold Rush are also examined. Coverage of such developments as the pony express and the difficulty of maintaining law and order faced with the likes of Jesse James and Billy the Kid could provoke discussions on the value of progress. Ingoglia has deftly presented the sad reality of the Battle of Little Big Horn, the near extinction of the buffalo and the consequent formation of government-run reservations, topics whose implications--war, civil and human rights, ecological preservation--are still relevant. Clear though often bland or utilitarian illustrations accompany the text; an index is included. Treating a myriad of topics that captivate youngsters, this useful reference tool seems certain to prompt further exploration of an intriguing period. Ages 7-11. (July)
