Comes the Millennium

Jack Blake. St. Martin's Press, $21.95 (183pp) ISBN 978-0-312-14571-2

If it is true that most of us prefer to have our own outlooks confirmed in print, this tidy little collection of opinions should appeal especially to those whose politics are slightly left of center. The author confesses that he's a Republican (Jack Blake is a pseudonym), but we learn nothing else about him except that he lives in Nebraska, has traveled and written extensively and values his public library. He takes aim for the most part at the religious and political right, lobbing his barbs at those who would enforce prayers in the schools, outlaw the teaching of evolution and make flag burning a federal offense. Though many of the views expressed here will be anathema to Gingrichites and their ilk, they offer a refreshing rebuttal to some of the hate messages one hears expressed these days everywhere from talk radio shows to the halls of Congress. A commonsense, and compassionate, primer offering middle-ground solutions to the nation's ills. (Sept.)
