Shushybye: Close Your Eyes

Stephen Syatt, , illus. by Frank Caruso. . St. Martin's, $10.95 (32pp) ISBN 978-0-312-37381-8

Syatt, the owner of a PR agency, launched the Shushabye brand in 2004; it includes music CDs, DVDs, a cable TV show and more. Here, a glow-in-the-dark cover introduces readers to the Shushies, who labor to “make dreams/ To last the night through,/ Then put them in Dream Boxes/ And send them to you.” With treacly prose and garish cartoons, Syatt and Caruso tell of a plucky Shushy—the purple, perpetually grinning Snoozles—who is assigned to make dreams for two bedtime rebels. Snoozles takes the renegades' entire family on a tour of Shushybye Land: “They saw the Rolling Hills of Nap Valley.... They saw the tall palm trees of Yawn Island and the white sands of Snore Shore”; a CD packaged with the book (not received by PW ) enables children and adults to read or sing along. As a standalone, the book has little to commend it; almost nothing about this is soothing or lulling. Ages 6 mos.-3yrs. (Nov.)
