English bulldog Zelda%E2%80%94star of the Zelda Wisdom line of greeting cards, books, and other products%E2%80%94takes center stage in this snazzy reboot of the Princess and the Frog fairy tale. Zelda and her bulldog pals appear in full costume%E2%80%94silk gown and tiara, fleece frog costume, purple bikini (!)%E2%80%94as the drama plays out in scenes photographed by Young. The sunny digital backgrounds give the story the feel of an amateur theater production (puffy clouds hang from string in the sky); Gardner's energetic, contemporary tone cements this as a playful, modern interpretation. "No thanks, Sweet Cakes," the frog tells Princess Zelda, turning down her offer of a crown, diamond choker, and massage gift card for helping her retrieve her beloved golden ball. Gardner doesn't include a kiss as part of the bargain; rather, Princess Zelda must promise to be the frog's BFF. Much less haunting than William Wegman's Fay's Fairy Tales (which featured photos of his Weimaraners), this title ought to draw a legion of dog lovers and Zelda fans, in addition to kids looking for a silly read.
