Drum Calls

Jo Clayton. Tor Books, $23.95 (384pp) ISBN 978-0-312-86119-3

The Time of Corruption approaches in the worlds of Iomard and Glandair in this first-rate sequel to Clayton's Drum Warning (1996). These two worlds occupy the same place but in different dimensions; both are full of the magical force called the Pneuma, and each is reachable from the other when Bridges temporarily connect them. Clayton continues stories from the first volume--of Cymel, a Glandair girl; of Breith, Cymel's friend on Iomard; of Lyanz, the prospective Hero; and of Mage Oerfel, who plans to manipulate events. She develops many--perhaps too many--new subplots and characters as well, including Radayam, who wants a goddess-inspired Cleansing, and the likable and unconventional Mole, who helps Cymel learn to use her powers. The depiction of Iomard's politics and households--each of the latter dominated by two married women and one husband--is inventive but occasionally confusing. Breith becomes enslaved, adding adventure and another well-built culture to the mix. This volume ends more satisfyingly than the first, as the Hero and his six Companions assemble, armies mass, Cymel and Breith exchange worlds and Glandair and Iomard draw closer to one reality. The complex intrigue and terminology may put off some readers, but many will want to see this intriguing and intricate saga through to its conclusion. (Oct.)
