Drum Warning

Jo Clayton. Tor Books, $23.95 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-312-86177-3

After more than 35 paperback fantasies, Clayton makes her hardcover debut with a fantasy distinguished by solid world-building bolstered by fine detail and atmosphere. The worlds of Iomard and Glandair are linked by the Pneuma, a force that some can manipulate to perform magic, including travel between the two worlds. As these worlds move closer to one another, a crisis known as the Settling, or the Corruption, is approaching; this prompts a wide and engaging cast of characters to try to study it, prevent it, use it for their own ends--or just plain survive it. Central to the narrative are three young people: Cymel, a girl on Glandair with Iomardi blood; Breith, the Iomardi boy she can contact magically; and Lyanz, who may be the Hero on whom the Settling may confer godlike powers. Around them spin very adult political intrigues, magical operations and issues of power. Even for the start of a series, the novel lacks a proper conclusion; but with likable characters and fresh depictions of magic and culture, it will please fantasy fans and have them peering ahead for the sequel.
