Shy Charlene and Sharyl

C. A. Nobens. Little Brown and Company, $12.95 (32pp) ISBN 978-0-316-61167-1

Charlene's relationship with Sharyl is, on the outside, odd, and one that most children will immediately understand and love. Charlene (who happens to be a young cat) receives Sharyl, a hand puppet, for Christmas. Charlene is very shy, while Sharyl is afraid of nothing. Sharyl makes the best Valentine, joins the Pep Squad, presents a winning science demonstration, and so on. Charlene, just as shy as ever, is astounded when she is elected school queen at the end of the year. As with the best imaginary friend, Sharyl allows Charlene the chance to express the more gregarious aspects of her personality. The valuable lesson enhances, but doesn't overwhelm, the very entertaining story. Ages 3-8. (October)
