When Elvy's parents divorce, Elvy is sent to live with her grandmother. Before school starts, she makes friends with Paul, an intelligent, reserved boy who lives nearby. At school, despite her better judgment, Elvy hangs around with Harry, a notorious practical joker. Lonely and rebellious, Elvy helps Harry execute his elaborate pranks. Though Paul disapproves of Elvy's involvement with Harry, he's always around to keep her out of trouble. In the aftermath of her final, near disastrous escapade, Elvy realizes which boy she truly cares for. At first glance this novel seems like typical fluffy paperback fare: the romance is predictable and Harry's practical jokes seem childish. Fortunately, Elvy's honest voice has the power to shake something poignant and truthful out of the conventional material. Ages 12-up. (July)
