Moonbeam on a Cat's Ear

Marie-Louise Gay. Silver Burdett Press, $7.95 (32pp) ISBN 978-0-382-09162-9

Rosie and her cat share a big, fluffy bed with myriad toys. A new moon shines down on them through the window, casting wondrous shadows. They are joined by Rosie's friend Toby Toby, a redhead with a frog on his shoulder. The three pluck the moon from the sky, hop aboard and sail off for adventure. ""Was it a dream . . . ?'' the narrative asks, as the final paintings offer alternative answers, showing Rosie and Toby Toby back in bed, the cat lolling on a slice of moon. The text, told in verse, is masterfully brief. Gay's art is splendid; a little something spills over the border of each picture, adding further dimension. A refreshing and fanciful tale. (38)
