McAleer, author of The Cosmic Mind-Boggling Book and The Body Almanac, organizes his material in a loose structure of thematic chapters (from the Milky Way to deep space and time) and serves up all manner of phenomena in appetizer-sized paragraphs laced with superlatives and, indeed, mind-boggling numbers and comparisons. While this makes for stimulating reading, it can also prove mind-numbing and confusing for anyone looking for a coherent overview of this vast subject. References to objects observable with the naked eye or low-power telescopes are useful, but overall this is a poor introduction to cosmology and physics. (March)
