This enormous (12 16) board book exhorts parents to ``Give your preschooler a head start!'' The volume offers busy, brightly colored pictures depicting ``basic concepts that every young child needs to master'' in letters, numbers, colors, shapes, etc. Children will enjoy the large format and Smith's lively illustrations; whether the promised ``head start'' will occur is a less-assured--and perhaps not as important--prospect.
