How to care for the elderly may seem a contemporary problem, but it is at least as old as this sensitively retold Italian folktale. An ailing grandfather moves in with his son's family. Eventually, caring for him proves too burdensome for Father. As they sadly walk to the old people's home, the eldest daughter spies a rock and cagily says, ``We will call this `Grandfather's Rock,' and we will rest on Grandfather's Rock, Father, when we carry you to the home for old people.'' Brought up short, Father takes Grandfather home, and the children happily pledge to help with more of the chores. Visually, the book memorably conjures up Italian country life and folk art of yore. Gamper uses watercolors with graceful diversity, ranging from the softly blurred lines of a moist, plowed field, to the intricate wood grain of Grandfather's bed. Classically beautiful, this book is a timely and wise appeal for cooperation within the extended family. Ages 4-8. (Sept.)
