View from the Seesaw

Although totally paralyzed as the result of a polio attack in 1955, Louis Sternburg remains committed to active life. Virtually confined to a rocking bed that enables him to breathe and communicate with some normality, he not only runs a business but achieved a doctorate from Brandeis University. This record of his 30-year bout with pain and depression is also the account of his marriage, of the support of his wife, children, friends and the professionals who at various periods aided in the restructuring of his life. The alternating voices here of this Massachusetts family convey the remarkable spirit of a man whose body is a prisoner but whose mind is very much in the world. (April)
