Chip Has Many Brother

Carle's collages and paintings, in stunning contrasts of vivid and dark tones, illustrate the story that Baumann bases on Northern European and Native American myths and legends. While Chip's brothers are off hunting, he stays home with his sister Bright Sun and grandmother Nuni. These are the glad times when Chip's animal friendsBear, Moose and Beaveremerge from hiding and visit, safe from the older boys' arrows. One day, though, Bright Sun falls ill and Nuni despairs. She believes Chip is too small to go for medicine to the aerie of Wise Raven. But Beaver makes a bridge for the traveler across deep waters and the other animals take him safely up a slippery mountain to the healer, then safely back home with the draught that cures Bright Sun. When the hunters return, Nuni explains Chip's many brothers in a surprise retelling of Bauman's fairy tale. (610)
