Lady of the Mist

Peggy Hanchar. Ivy Books, $5.99 (289pp) ISBN 978-0-449-14867-9

Despite a lovely 17th-century Scottish highlands setting, this is a run-of-the-mill historical romance from Hanchar (The Scottish Bride). A tedious combination of passive heroine--constantly needing rescue from witchcraft-fearing villagers who want to burn her at the stake--and stereotypical hero--always there to perform her rescue when he isn't himself being gored by boars or ambushed by renegades--that never rises above the humdrum. Gillian MacGregor, put under the protection of warrior lord Thane Campbell (sworn enemy of her clan), willingly becomes his mistress, then leaves in a snit when she discovers he's betrothed to another. Eventually, love conquers all, but, by then, readers may be beyond caring. (May)
