Test Your Eq: Find Out How Emotionally Intelligent You Really Are

Mark H. Davis, Ph. D. Davis. New American Library, $10 (192pp) ISBN 978-0-451-21530-7

Ten years after Daniel Goleman's blockbuster Emotional Intelligence, Davis, a professor of psychology, offers self-administered tests for readers to evaluate their own degree of emotional intelligence, or EQ. Davis acknowledges that the tests haven't been developed with as much precision as expensive commercial instruments. The tests are divided into chapters on ""recognizing emotional states,"" ""understanding emotions,"" ""regulating and controlling emotions"" and ""using emotions effectively,"" and are in a variety of questionnaire-based styles. At the end of the book, Davis provides a chapter on how to improve one's emotional intelligence. Although some tests won't apply to all readers (many of the scenarios and questions refer to children and spouses, for example), the book makes a concise introduction to the parameters of emotional intelligence, and its corollaries in behavior.
