The Arthritis Relief Diet

James Scala. Dutton Books, $17.95 (278pp) ISBN 978-0-453-00549-4

The benefits of diet therapy for arthritis sufferers is the subject of controversy, and skeptics will not be persuaded by nutritionist Scala's (Making the Vitamin Connection testimonial letters from arthritics who purportedly have been using a briefer version of his diet. Readers also will be little impressed by the brief bibliography, which includes only three scientific studies on the nutrition-arthritis link, or by Scala's frank admission that the diet he proposes is lacking in certain nutrients, requiring the use of nutritional supplementsincluding products by Shaklee, where he is vice-president. While there is yet no definitive evidence that the proffered low-fat, low-cholesterol, high-fiber foods will fight inflammation, they are conducive to weight loss, which is known to help some arthritics. The book also includes simple exercises designed to improve fitness without overtaxing joints and muscles, and these, too, can help readers to shed pounds. (August 27rprod: please bring u)
