Old Provincetown in Early Photographs

Irma M. Ruckstuhl. Dover Publications, $12.95 (96pp) ISBN 978-0-486-25410-4

Ruckstuhl has collected some 100 photographs of Provincetown, Mass., taken around the turn of the century by professional and amateur photographers. Their pictures show lower Cape Cod in a bygone era and include shots, for example, of the Marconi Wireless Station before its dismantling; the construction of the Provincetown Monument; tourist steamers from Boston (the means most people at the time used to reach the summer resort); stately commercial and residential buildings that since either have been altered or torn down; and many beautiful boats, ranging from a group of vessels owned by members of the New York Yacht Club to several naval warships. Of general historical interest, but particularly for those who love the Cape. (May)
