Sudek: 2nd Edition
Sonja Bullaty. Crown Publishing Group, $35 (1pp) ISBN 978-0-517-56419-6
This beautiful book of 85 black-and-white pictures on thick, creamy-colored paper is the first ever published in the West on the work of Czechoslovakian photographer Josef Sudek. Sudek died in 1976 after spending most of his 80 years in Prague, and most of his photos were taken in the city. Many show dreamlike vistas of Prague's parks, graveyards and streets, some shot through his studio window. Others are still lifes of fruit and eggs arranged on his windowsill. Sudek lost his right arm fighting in Italy during World War I. He never photographed people again after the 1920s, and beginning after WW II, he concentrated exclusively on contact prints, making no more enlargements. Bullaty, a former assistant of Sudek, is a photographer living in New York. (December 4)
