Momentum: Women in American Politics Now

Ronna Romney. Crown Publishers, $18.95 (229pp) ISBN 978-0-517-56890-3

This spirited look at the advances women have made in the political arena explores many facets, and despite the conclusion that women do not yet have parity with men, is nonetheless positive about how far they have come. Romney, a Republican national committeewoman, and Harrison, coauthor of The Shock of Motherhood, interviewed female politicians and note that sexism is not entirely dead. Although a growing number of women hold office at local and state levels, there is a paucity of women in federal positions, including Congress. As candidates they also have difficulty raising funds, notably in securing vitally important ""early money.'' But the authors are optimistic that soon women will truly have a representative say in government. (March)
