Theo and Me

Malcolm-Jamal Warner. Dutton Books, $14.95 (208pp) ISBN 978-0-525-24694-7

Hundreds of teenagers write to Theo Huxtable, the character played by Warner on the popular Cosby Show , expressing their adolescent anxieties and concerns as they would to a friend. Although he makes no pretense at authority, Warner, with the aid of freelancer Paisner, here offers solid advice about family problems (e.g., his mother is a single parent), and other situa tions he experiences as a teenager himself. In a useful way, values and choices are discussed, and Theo/Malcolm takes a strong stand against sex and drugs for teenagers without sounding preachy. A foreword by his television father, and an afterword by Alvin Poussaint of the Harvard Medical School, underscore the helpful nature of the television star's address to the emotional and physical well-being of his peers. 150,000 first printing.
