Horse of Her Own

Joanna Campbell, Jonna Campbell. Skylark Books, $2.75 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-553-15564-8

Penny, 13, longs for a horse, but her parents don't share her enthusiasm. Alone with her daydreams and countless horse books, Penny feels frustrated; and the fact that her best friend Jan attends regular riding classes doesn't help. A neighbor's horse catches her eye, and she overcomes her shyness to ask its owner if she can help in the stableyard. The owner agrees, and for the next several months Penny devotes her spare time to Bones, breaking him to saddle and training him to trot and jump. Jan convinces her to enter the intermediate jumping competition at the summer horse show, and from then on Penny and Bones are a team. Horse fans will cheer Penny on in this breezy, heartwarming story. Ages 9-12. (January)
