Yvonne Greene. Bantam Books, $2.5 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-553-25638-3

In this first book in the Kelly Blake, Teen Model series, readers find out that Kelly doesn't want to be a model; she'd rather run cross-country and dream of dating Eric, a teammate who seems just as interested in her. But her best friend Jennifer, too short to model herself, drags Kelly off to a Saturday afternoon Miss magazine teen makeover, where she is discovered by the head of the FLASH! modeling agency, Meg Dorian. By Monday, Kelly is modeling for a Vogue-like magazine; it isn't more than a couple of days later that Kelly finds out she's going to be a cover girl. She stays out late at an elite Manhattan club, starts to find out how superficial people in the business really are, but her future looks glittering. And Eric, after a couple of false impressions, is completely understanding. Though this book might not be fair to models who spend years waiting for a break, it is as glossy and glamorous as a fashion magazine. There's a real sense of being on the inside to all the action, and Kelly is an intelligent and attractive heroine. The pace of the book, like Kelly's life, is breakneck; this series, like Kelly's career, has promise. (12-up)
