Pet the Baby Farm Animals

Lucinda McQueen. Cartwheel Books, $8.95 (1pp) ISBN 978-0-590-47687-4

In the tradition of Pat the Bunny , this small comb-bound book offers an assortment of tactile experiences. The front cover, showing a bunny with a literally fuzzy tail, gives an idea of the textured surprises within. Pastel-colored illustrations depict a barnyardful of baby critters, while text encourages fingertip explorations (``Chirpy Little Chick, may I feel your downy soft feathers?''). Youngsters caught up in the pleasure of stroking Baby Foal's pony tail and petting Little Lamb's fleece may not care that the fabrics inserted into the pages bear little resemblance to hair, fur, feathers, etc. One quibble: aside from their colors, the swatches representing the calf's and piglet's coats seem to be of the same material. Ages 3 mos.-5 yrs. 75,000-copy first printing; Children's BOMC selection. (Mar.)
