Husband Hunting: How to Win at the Mating Game

Jane F. Carpineto. Simon & Schuster, $6.95 (142pp) ISBN 978-0-671-60389-2

A psychotherapist and teacher of ""mating'' courses at adult education programs in the Boston area, Carpineto recommends that women use dating services and create networks. She delineates problem types of men, lists good qualities to look for (men who are honest, like women as people, enjoy life and intimacy) and intersperses the guide with questionnaires to help the reader assess such matters as self-image versus others' perceptions. This book is distinguished by its solid psychoanalytic insights: for example, Carpineto recommends that women who have had difficult relationships with their fathers make themselves consciously aware of that relationship. (``Dredge up every memory, however painful, of life withor withoutFather.'') The emphasis throughout is on knowing one's self and finding a compatible person to live with. While there are not many surprises here, this is nonetheless a helpful, well-written guide. (July)
