Rose's Picture

Marie Wabbes. Silver Burdett Press, $3.95 (22pp) ISBN 978-0-671-66613-2

In these four small books, Rose meets and masters several situations that would stymie a lesser pig. She concocts a meal from cereal, melon, pea soup, cream and chocolate in Rose Is Hungry. When Rose Is Muddy, a rainy splash in a puddle cleans her up. Rose's Picture entails a search for a paintbrush and the donning of a smock, and she fills her tub with toys before climbing in in Rose's Bath. Rose is a sweetly independent preschooler, capable of imaginative play, but still requiring a nudge from her mother to take a bath. Wabbes's watercolors, as rosy as her heroine, show the too-tall backgrounds of a child's world, and Rose moving through these large places with ease. Ages 2-5. (August)
