Every Day

James Young. Simon & Schuster, $9.94 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-671-79583-2

The dailiness of a child's routine is amusingly and reassuringly reinforced in this perky, unaffected work. Beginning with ``This is the way I get out of bed. I do it every day,'' the chipper narrator chronicles his rituals--activities with which all youngsters will easily identify. Even the wry, unexpected twist at book's end will provoke chuckles of recognition from kids and parents alike. In a palette dominated by cheerful blues and violets, crisp cartoon-style illustrations--made even crisper by the spreads' abundant white space--detail homey, often humorous details of decor and dress (imitating his father, for instance, the protagonist sports a shirt and pullover sweater worn fashionably outside his pants). The abundance of familiar touches will prove comforting (Daddy sports a five o'clock shadow around the house, but is perfectly clean-shaven in his business attire); and little ones will relish the lovable pooch that cavorts on nearly every spread. Gentle and genial. Ages 3-6. (Mar.)
