Liberating the Adult Within: Moving from Childish Responses to Authentic Adulthood

Helen Kramer. Simon & Schuster, $20.5 (235pp) ISBN 978-0-671-87009-6

Even well-functioning people react at times to stressful situations with childish responses (rigidity, blaming, impatience, dependency, melodrama), although they know these responses are self-defeating, shows psychotherapist Kramer, founder of R.E.A.L. Solutions, who has coined the term ``emotional dyslexia'' for these reactions. Through case studies and sample dialogues comparing the childish with the mature, she advises readers on how to replace their emotional dyslexia with mature responses to all kinds of stress. Separate chapters cover relationships, balancing intimacy and autonomy, the single life, accepting differences in others, being an adult with parents, raising kids, ``finding your power'' and dealing with catastrophe. Although there's a lot of good, practical guidance here, nothing distinguishes this self-help book from others on the market. First serial to New Woman; author tour. (June)
