Solving Prostate Problems: Answers and Advice from a Leading Expert

Martin Gelbard. Simon & Schuster, $12 (255pp) ISBN 978-0-671-88465-9

With so many celebrities publicly discussing their prostate cancer, it's no surprise that this topic generates great interest. But instead of offering a primer on prostate cancer, Gelbard, a clinical professor of urology at the UCLA Medical School, and writer Bentley also educate readers more generally about prostate and urinary tract health. With numerous charts, diagrams and well-thought-out, short personal histories, the authors describe urinary tract infections; prostate problems in younger men, such as prostatis and infertility; and benign prostatic hypertrophy in older men. Impotence-its causes and treatment-is not neglected here. Advice is given on counseling, penile implants and the prescription drug, yohimbine hydrochloride, often prescribed by physicians. The authors walk readers through the various screening tests for prostate cancer and discuss treatment options in depth. Although written for men, women may also find it beneficial for their understanding of men's health. (Feb.)
