Fearsome's Hero

Dona Schenker. Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers, $15 (141pp) ISBN 978-0-679-85424-1

Throughout fifth grade Honey Kotcher terrorized Tully Webster, but now that they're in sixth grade, she has decided to become his girlfriend. Unfortunately for Tully, Honey's affection is as fearsome as her hatred. Tully tries several schemes to discourage Honey, but he becomes more desperate as each plan backfires. Frustrated, angry and confused, Tully comes to realize that friendship can be found under the most unexpected and unusual circumstances. Atmospheric details lend warmth and vitality to this humorous tale set in Texas farmland. Schenker ( Throw a Hungry Loop ) perceptively conveys Tully's desire to protect his dignity without wounding another person, and she gives her character admirable depth by tempering his determination with sensitivity. Readers may be inspired to confront similar situations with equal perseverance and insight. Ages 9-13. (May)
