Moms & Dads, Kids & Sports

Pat McInally. Scribner Book Company, $0 (238pp) ISBN 978-0-684-18965-9

A Harvard graduate who played for a decade in the National Football League, father of several children who has coached children's sports and author of the syndicated newspaper column ""Pat Answers for Kids,'' McInally is well qualified to write a book about sports and young people. His principal emphasis is on the role parents play and should play in helping their children adjust to athletics, for, in his view, good parental guidance is the sine qua non of success. He urges mothers and fathers not to fear failure or loss of prestige when their children do not excel but to be motivated by love and striving for inner peace. He covers such topics as nutrition, health and safety, conditioning and equipment. His book is an excellent guide for moms and dads whose offspring are merely average athletes as well as for those whose kids may be future stars. (May)
