Going Live

Coleen E. Booth. Scribner Book Company, $14.95 (181pp) ISBN 978-0-684-19392-2

In her impressive first novel, Booth introduces 11-year-old Delaney Crawford, a memorable heroine who gets what she has always wanted--a permanent acting job. At least she thinks it's what she wants, until her role as one of three hosts of a TV talk show for kids begins to take its toll in unexpected ways. Delaney finds she can't spend much time with her best friend, and she has trouble balancing work and school. Adding to the young performer's woes is her reluctance to accept the fact that her widowed mother, a dentist, is dating her business partner. Delaney's animated first-person narrative will have young readers cheering her on as she gradually works through her difficulties. A believable supporting cast, snappy dialogue and some engrossing behind-the-scenes glimpses of a TV show's creation make this highly entertaining fiction--and make Booth an author to watch. Ages 10-12. (Apr.)
