From Chaos to Confidence

Susan M. Campbell. Simon & Schuster, $22 (249pp) ISBN 978-0-684-80253-4

Virtually only in the final section does Campbell, a California business consultant, concentrate on the business organization, making the book applicable to one's workplace with suggestions on how to gain acceptance for the precepts presented. Her buzzword, Learning/Discovery values--meaning respect, trust, etc.--doesn't disguise the paucity of original ideas Campbell has to offer in this self-help guide positing that one needs a ``vision shift to deal with the ever-changing flow of reality.'' If we function in the Security/Control mode, we are attempting to control the uncontrollable, whereas by adopting the Learning/Discovery perspective, we can turn crises into opportunities. Chapters discuss how to discover your essence--the person you were before you were conditioned to be something else; how to find your ``cosmic vocation''--nurturer, advocate, etc.; how to cultivate Both/And thinking, which brings together all perspectives on a problem. Plenty of self-evaluation questionnaires are included. (Aug.)
