The Mouse and the Apple

In this rejuvenation of the classic aphorism ``Good things come to those who wait,'' Mouse receives a just reward for outwaiting an apple that resists its inevitable fall. Cow, Hen, Goose and Goat join in the vigil, but they soon grow restless and turn to various unsuccessful schemes to shake down the apple. In the end it is Mouse against apple--and how sweet (and crunchy) the victory! Butler's ( Henny Penny ) barnyard bevy appears delightfully goofy, a cross between cardboard cutouts and cute ceramic icons (Hen and Mouse could pass for salt and pepper shakers). Although text and illustration may win no awards for originality, beginning readers will enjoy this work for its simplicity and upbeat presentation. Ages 3-up. (Apr.)
