Walkshaping: Indoors or Out, 6 Weeks to a Better Body

Gary Yanker. Hearst Communications, $20 (268pp) ISBN 978-0-688-13813-4

``Walkshaping,'' a concept developed by walk-clinic specialist Yanker, uses walking as its core activity while also recommending calisthenics and body-building. The end product: a total-body workout involving all 10 major muscle groups. With a choice of workouts gentle on the back and joints, and ranging in time increments from 12 to 60 minutes, Yanker provides routines that tone and strengthen muscles. The exercises, suitable indoors or outdoors, reflect a balanced approach to body development and fitness. Yanker claims that a six-week course can result in a reduction of between one and 10 pounds of body fat and a loss of between one and five inches of fat on the waist, hips and thighs. He suggests that readers photograph themselves before beginning the program and compare the old with new photographs taken at the end of six, eight and 12 weeks. Walkshaping may well be an excellent fitness choice for readers who feel skittish about vigorous exercise routines or about classes at the gym. Photos not seen by PW. (Feb.)
