Weight Training for the Over-35s

Mary Southall. David & Charles Publishers, $0 (96pp) ISBN 978-0-7153-8957-7

In this compact handbook, British fitness authorities Southall and Bartlett focus on the needs of weight trainers over the age of 35. Building on a solid explanation of the body's muscular system and the effects of age upon it, the authors (one of whom is 60) organize training programs both for beginners and for those who are advanced. Illustrated exercises for retarding the aging process are also included, as is an array of information on diet and weight control, stress reduction, training at home vs. in a gym and motivational psychology. Occasionally, the authors present material in a breezy way, as when they discuss general health rules, but their effort is mostly well focused and usable. (December)
