Moura Lympany: Her Autobiography

Moura Lympany. Peter Owen Publishers, $45.95 (186pp) ISBN 978-0-7206-0824-3

English concert pianist Moura Lympany (born 1916) has had a very successful career. After studying with Paul Weingarten in Vienna, she became an accomplished performer in her teens and went on to launch an international performing career, specializing in the works of Russian composers. In addition to recounting her professional achievements, this autobiography, coauthored with Strickland ( The Byron Women ), covers the pianist's two marriages and her battle with breast cancer, but the uninspired writing does not do justice to an eventful life. Although Lympany's love of music and continuing daily devotion to the piano shine through, little of her character comes alive. Photos. (Aug.)
