Godsword

Emerson Cole. Severn House Publishers, $28.95 (395pp) ISBN 978-0-7278-6350-8

Readers in need of a James Bond fix before the release of the next movie may find Cole's debut novel diverting, but his story-telling is certainly a notch below authors such as Frederick Forsythe and Clive Cussler. This action-packed thriller centers on the exploits of Connor Brock, a seasoned operative for the powerful and mysterious organization known as ICE (aka Investigation of Corporate Espionage). Brock is called upon, along with his trusty Irish sidekick, Matt Ferguson, to foil the megalomaniacal ambitions of a villain who models himself after the Mongols. The banter in the face of death is reminiscent of the worst of the Roger Moore Bond films, and makes this more cartoonish than other such books in its genre.
