Eternity’s Mark

Maeve Greyson. Kensington/Brava, $14 trade paper (288p) ISBN 978-0-7582-7339-0

Greyson inexplicably won Brava’s Writing with the Stars competition with this conventional paranormal. Outrageously alpha hero Taggart de Gaelson must find the one magically talented woman in the world who can save the sacred Draecna race of dragons from extinction. Feisty, overly stubborn Hannah MacPherson, a smalltown American veterinarian, is desperately clinging to the memory of her dead husband and immediately distrusts Taggart while, of course, fighting off a blazing hormonal reaction to him. As he tries to haul her off to Scotland, the usual baddies appear to throw snags in their way. The story seesaws between cutesy contemporary romance and moody paranormal before finding its way, and while Greyson earns points for jaunty writing, her unoriginal plot and overdrawn characters rely on stock formula rather than ingenuity.
