Whose Toes Are Those?

Sally Symes, illus. by Nick Sharratt. Candlewick, $4.99 (22p) ISBN 978-0-7636-6274-5

In a companion to Yawn (2011), Symes and Sharratt ask readers to guess the identities of five animals, based on glimpses of their extremities. “Whose tail? Whose toes? Whose twitchy nose?” reads the opening spread, as a long white tail, tiny pink foot, and whiskered snout poke out from behind a block of cheese; lifting a flap reveals a mouse in full. The well-designed flaps mask each habitat (including a doghouse and a hippo’s jungle) completely after each reveal, and Sharratt’s brightly colored cartoons have an easygoing and friendly appeal. Ages 3–up. (Dec.)
